Rickly was a Missouri artist. She studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Art, at Harvard, with Hawthorne, Berninghaus and Wuerpel. She was also a WPA artist. In the 1930’s she established the St. Genevieve School of Art and artists colony in St. Genevieve, Missouri.
