Born in Beijing in 1920, Zao Wou-Ki’s journey as an artist began at a young age. His passion for art led him to study at the China Academy of Art before moving to Paris in the 1940s to further hone his craft. He became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
It was in Paris that Zao Wou-Ki truly found his artistic voice, blending traditional Chinese ink painting techniques with Western abstract art styles.
