Born in Sydney, Australia to Claude and Joyce in 1949. Gittoes’ family Gittoes’ father, Claude, became the Secretary of the Department of Main Roads while his mother, Joyce, was an artist. Gittoes began his art career as a student at the University of Sydney. He showed a unique talent for expressing complex emotions and ideas through his art. His works often explores difficult topics, serving as a powerful commentary on the state of the world.

Until the 1980s, he remained chiefly in Australia. But in 1986 he travelled to Nicaragua, and to other countries that had conflict like the Phiippines, Cambodia, Rwanda and other areas of South Africa. He spent some time in American and was influenced by artist Joseph Delaney. In the US he began the Hotel Kennedy Suite, which was inspired by opposition to the Vietnam War.
