Gilliam joined the 2nd generation Washington Color Field painters in 1962. He is an important African-American member of that movement. The Color Field painters had an interest in the qualities of color and applying acrylic paint to unprimed canvas. Gilliam’s major exhibitions include the Whitney, the Corcoran and Philadelphia Museum of Modern Art, MOMA and many more.
