Sultan was born in Asheville, NC. He has an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. He began working full time on his art in 1979 in NYC and showed at the Venice Biennial the Whitney Museum that year. He is known for his use of industrial materials. His work is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in PAFA, the Tate Modern and more.
