Howardena Pindell was born in Philadelphia, PA.  She studied painting at Boston University and Yale University.  She is known for her unique works, piecing together strips of canvas and sewing them together and punching out paper spheres with a hole punch, numbering them and creating a collage.  In this way she explores structure and color and often addresses racism and feminism, violence and slavery.  Her approach has been important and groundbreaking.
