Thomas Sills was a talented African American artist. He used rags, velvet, housepainter brushes, and even his own hands to create with industrial enamels, magnesite, and oil on wood, canvas or any other material he found useful. Much later in his career, Sills would turn to collage as a medium. Sills explained that his wife (artist Jeanne Reynal) encouraged his creativity and helped him get his first show with Betty Parsons. Willem DeKooning told him not to destroy paintings when he became discouraged.
