Sam Gilliam

(b. 1933)

Gilliam grew up in Louisville, KY, and received an MA in painting from the U. of Louisville, in 1961.  He joined the 2nd generation Washington Color Field painters in 1962. He is an important African-American member of the movement. Gilliam has an interest in the qualities of color, applying acrylic to unprimed canvas. Major exhibitions include the Whitney, the Corcoran and Philadelphia Museum of Modern Art, MOMA and many more
