Norman Lewis
(1909-1979)
Norman W. Lewis, born in Harlem, New York was a leading African-American painter, scholar, and teacher. He is associated with Abstract Expressionism; however Lewis also used representational strategies to focus on black urban life and his community’s struggles. He received the Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from National Endowment of the Arts and more.
